The main purpose of dental sealants is to prevent dental caries more commonly referred to as cavities, and various other forms of tooth decay. As the occurrence of tooth decay a related issues began to rise, development began on a treatment in the 1960’s.  Teeth in the back of the mouth, such as molars and premolars, are at particular risk for cavities and decay because of the pits and fissures that shape the tooth.  Even consistent dental hygiene can fail to protect these teeth because of their shape and placement. Food can still often become trapped in these crevices, leading to tooth decay and cavities, which in turn lead to gum disease if untreated.

Daly City dental experts familiar with the process of applying sealants suggest that this process be completed by a licensed dentist in the dentists’ office. The process of applying the sealant will begin with the dentist or dental assistant cleaning and drying the tooth or teeth which will be sealed. After the tooth is clean and dry, a thin layer of liquefied plastic on all pits and fissures of the tooth or teeth.
